1872-CC $10 Gold Eagle NGC AU55. Among the rarest of all Carson City eagles, this high grade example is a prime rarity. Only 4,600 pieces were produced (Rusty Goe suggests 5,500, Douglas Winter suggest 5,908), and heavy circulation took its toll on this date, and many others produced during the earliest years at the Carson City Mint. Virtually unknown in higher grades, this piece appears to be near the top of the condition census for this issue, with two recently graded AU-58 (perhaps upgraded AU-55 pieces) and three or four others graded AU-55 grading near it. Yet, it remains overlooked as the popular first year of issue, which is more available attracts more attention. With an estimated 75 pieces still known to exist in all grades, one should not underestimate the important opportunity of this offering.

During the first few years of production at the Carson City Mint the Mints personnel was inexperienced, and quality control varied widely over the time. As such, many of these early coins from this Nevada Mint come in varying quality, and many are weakly struck. Over the years, other pieces have been cleaned, or otherwise damaged, and problem-free examples are rare in all grades. With the popularity of collecting specific series by Mint coins such as offered here have become increasingly popular, but offerings have become substantially less.

A choice about uncirculated specimen, this is a prime survivor from the so-called Wild West years. A sharp, much more than the average specimen of this issue, and original surfaces both highlight this coin. Ample luster is visible on both sides, only slightly broken by some wear which is visible on the highest points. Red to orange gold color is seen on both the obverse and reverse, with highlights in various lighter colors. Both sides are remarkably free from significant abrasions, and it seems that this coin spent a very short time in circulation. In all, this is a great coin which is destined for the finest set of Carson City coinage!
