1872-CC Seated Dollar S$1 NGC AU53. A lovely example of a historic coin, this piece features pristine surfaces and a beautiful silver and olive color. In 1840, the United States began issuing silver dollars for general circulation. The coins were well received by the public but by March of 1852, the silver content of the coins became worth more than their actual face value. Later issues of the Liberty Seated dollar coin were not used for everyday purchases, but became used in export trades with the Orient. Liberty Seated dollar coins began to resume circulation in 1870, when the price of silver lowered enough, allowing the coins to be placed back into circulation.

The Carson City Mint produced approximately 3,150 examples of the 1872-CC dollar making it one of the lowest minted coins of the series. The Mint, which was opened at the peak of the silver boom in 1870, took advantage of the vast amount of silver being mined at the site of the Comstock Lode. 50 different issues of silver coins were minted in Carson City, all bearing the popular CC mintmark. When looking at this coin, one can imagine the fortunes that were made by mining the millions of ounces of silver from the Comstock Lode.

This example of the Liberty Seated dollar was designed by one of the most famous designers of all time, Christian Gobrecht. As the third U.S Mint director, Gobrecht crafted the Seated Dollar design, which features Liberty sitting on a rock holding a Liberty Pole that is topped by a Phrygian cap. In the western provinces of the Roman Empire the Phrygian cap came to signify freedom and the pursuit of liberty. This example features the In God We Trust motto, which was added in 1866.

Graded AU-53 by NGC, this example is moderately priced for the fantastic condition it is in. A key date in the series, this example would be a perfect fit for the collector who is looking for that one special coin that stands out over all the rest.
