1873-S Double Eagle (1873-S $20) PCGS MS60 CAC. PQ ! While double eagles at this grade level are usually not that attractive, this coin is an happy exception to that rule. With some scattered marks, but none heavy or much distracting, this coin appears to be of true premium quality to us, which his certainly attested by the CAC sticker that has been applied to this coin. With a total mintage of 1,040,600 coins, this issue is not rare, but still surprisingly hard to find in uncirculated grades. It has been estimated that perhaps 200 1873-s double eagle coins exist in uncirculated grades, a number which includes the possible existence of more pieces than currently accounted for.

Two varieties are noted this year, identified by the final digit in the date. While the difference is not that large, it still is easily to see. The present piece is an example of the so-called close 3, with both ends of the 3 being very close. On the other, open 3 variety, these, not surpringly, are further apart. This difference comes with virtually every denomination that was struck at the San Francisco Mint this year. Recognized as true varieties, the whole set makes for a very interesting display and will give some insight into the use of different numbering punches during the 1870s.

The present coin, as previously mentioned, is uncirculated, with full luster visible on both sides. Scattered marks account for the grade, but none are severe enough to limit the grade to the circulated level, which sometimes happens with truly uncirculated gold coins (usually, it is the other way around). Slightly darker khaki-gold color is seen on the reverse, with the obverse having a more yellow-golden color. Despite the low numerical grade on the holder the eye-appeal is excellent, and this coin will please every conscious buyer of uncirculated gold coins.
