1876-CC Double Eagle NGC MS61. Fresh BU. 1876-CC $20. Completely original, this is a perfect coin for a high quality set of uncirculated coinage from the fabled Carson City Mint. Of the mintage of 138,441 pieces, only a small number survives in true uncirculated grades. The majority of surviving coins have seen circulation, with luster impairments noting the lack of uncirculated surfaces. As such all uncirculated examples are scarce, a feature of the majority of gold coins from this Nevada Mint.

The Carson City Mint started production of coinage in 1870, and focused on silver and gold coinage. By 1876, the Mint workers had acquired the experience to make good products, and as we see from this coin that experience worked out well. It is sharply struck, with no Mint-made abrasions to be noted. No planchet problems, often found on earlier issues are noted, and overall this coin appears to be of premium quality.

The present piece is an example of the so-called type 2 of Liberty double eagles. Struck from 1866 to 1876, this subset makes for a very interesting collection challenge. The set features coins from the Philadelphia, Carson City and San Francisco Mints, and in full uncirculated condition is a true challenge to put together. In fact, a complete uncirculated set is even impossible to complete, as the first year of the Carson City Mint, the 1870-CC is unknown in uncirculated condition. In fact, even in about uncirculated, or any grade, it is a prime rarity and the key date to such a set.

Yet, for the collector wishing to put together such a set, this coin would be an excellent start. While it shows a number of bag marks accounting for the grade, it still boasts excellent eye-appeal. Its surfaces are completely original, and not dull or washed-out as commonly found on coinage from this era. As previously mentioned, the strike is strong and no marks of note are noted. A great coin for the specialized collector of 19th century gold coinage!
