1876-S Double Eagle (1876-S $20) NGC MS63. Mint luster glistens from the devices of this lovely 1876-S Double Eagle. A couple of minor marks under ERI on the reverse and very light wispiness on the obverse keep this coin from a higher mint state grade. The severe bag marks that are often found on uncirculated coins of this date are absent. The strike is average on the obverse and somewhat stronger on the obverse. An obverse die crack is noted near the rim just past star 8 and over 9 and 10. This coin is one from the last year of the Type 2 double eagles. Type 1 had no reverse motto. IN GOD WE TRUST was added in 1866 and continued until the last issue in 1907. For Type 3, which began in 1877, William Barber, who succeeded Longacre as Chief Engraver, changed the denomination from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS.

The Coronet or Liberty Head double eagle was designed by James B. Longacre. It shows a left-facing head of Liberty in profile, wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. She is surrounded by thirteen six-pointed stars with the date below. Her hair is tied behind her head and flows down her neck. Dentils are around the periphery of both sides of the coin. The reverse shows a heraldic eagle with elaborate ribbons on both sides of the shield extending from the top corner down to the eagles tail feathers. The ribbons are inscribed, on the left E PLURIBUS and UNUM on the right. The ribbons were added to the design to symbolize the denomination since this was the first twenty dollar coin. There is an oval of thirteen stars above the eagles head, in which the motto was placed and an arc of rays from wing tip to wing tip behind the upper half of the oval. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is in an arc above the eagle, and the denomination TWENTY D. is below. The mint mark is between the tail feathers and the second T of TWENTY.

In its population report NGC shows a population 4,800 coins certified in all grades. In MS63, there are 69 with 12 better.
