1878-CC Morgan Silver Dollar (1878-CC S$1 Morgan) NGC MS65 CAC.  This lustrous Carson City Morgan dollar is mainly frosty white with lovely peripheral toning of blue and gold on both sides. Slight abrasion is seen on the obverse, in keeping with the grade of MS65 that is confirmed by CAC. The strike is full on both sides with all of Libertys hair lines and the eagles feathers sharp and clear. Morgan dollars were issued annually from 1878 to 1904 and then in 1921. They show a close-up head of Liberty in profile facing left. She wears a headband inscribed LIBERTY. In her hair are cotton, corn, wheat, and tobacco. She wears a modified Phrygian cap and is surrounded with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, thirteen stars (seven left and six right), and the date. The reverse shows an eagle with wings raised looking left. In its talons are arrows and olive branch, symbols of preparedness and peace. A wreath is below, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is above. Except for the eagles wing tips, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR, separated by stars, circumscribe the design.
The mint at Carson City was originally established to convert silver from the Comstock Lode to coinage. Most of this coinage was in the form of Morgan silver dollars; however, the first coins struck at Carson City were Liberty Seated 1870-CC dollars. Shortly afterwards, gold eagles, half eagles and double eagles were struck. The Carson City Mint did not strike coins made of copper or nickel.
