1884-CC Morgan Silver Dollar (1884-CC S$1 Morgan) NGC MS66 PL CAC. This proof-like 1884-CC Morgan Dollar has bright luster and very frosty devices. There is also light peripheral toning on both sides. The obverse shows gold, blue, and violet, and the reverse has mainly gold with hints of the other colors. There is a small spot of dark toning under the eagles wing near the arrowheads, and another larger spot beneath the other wing. The coin grades MS66 and is proof-like because of the contrast between the devices and the fields, which is confirmed by CAC. The strike is full and sharp on the obverse and above average for the reverse, which shows a little weakness on the eagles breast.

In order for a coin to be proof-like, it must show contrast between the devices and the field. The Mint occasionally deliberately made proof-like coins as presentation pieces from brilliantly polished dies. However, sometimes proof-like coins were made merely as a result of being among the first struck by new dies, as is the case with the present coin.

When first discovered, gold and silver found in Nevada had to be shipped over the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the branch mint in San Francisco. This trip was dangerous and expensive. The Nevada mine owners asked Congress to establish a branch of the mint in their state, and legislation was enacted in 1863. Carson City was chosen as the location for the mint facility because it was near some of the major mining sites.
