1891 Gold Eagle NGC MS63 - US Rare Coin Investments

1891 Gold Eagle, NGC MS63. One of the later dates in the Liberty eagle series, the 1891 issue from the Philadelphia Mint had a mintage of 91,820 circulation strikes. While this is not as low as some issues from the Branch Mints from the same era, it is a relatively low number. Furthermore, this issue is surprisingly scarce in uncirculated condition, especially at the MS-63 level and higher. Only a single gem example is known to exist, which leaves most collectors with a limited number of MS-63 and MS-64 pieces which are suited for high grade date sets of this denomination.

Despite its scarcity in the grades mentioned above most collectors will consider this date a common issue which is easily acquired. While that comment might be true for the circulated and lowest uncirculated grades, its a true understatement at the present grade level. This is a scenario that comes with many late 20th century gold coins from the Philadelphia Mint, but which is not always understood.

The present coin is a nice uncirculated example of this scarce date, with vibrant luster visible on both sides. The strike is sharp, with only some very minor weakness visible in Libertys hair. The fields are virtually free from distracting marks, with some very light scuffing being the only reason for the limitation of grade. Yet, despite these minor points the eye-appeal is excellent, with light green-gold coloration on the yellow-golden fields. A nice example of this scarce gold coin in a grade that is not offered on the market with much frequency.
