1892-O Half Eagle (1892-O $5) NGC AU58. Much mint luster still shimmers from the devices of this lovely 1892-O Half Eagle, which is seen in an old NGC holder. A scratch from the second star to Libertys neck and light abrasion on both sides, keep this coin from a mint state grade. The strike is above average on both sides with just slight central weakness. The 1892-O half eagle was designed by Christian Gobrecht. On it he used the coronet motif that was repeated on the quarter eagle and eagle coins too. To the heraldic eagle design of the reverse, a banner was added in 1866 with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The mintmark is on the reverse below the eagle and above the V in FIVE. The mintmark is a medium almost round O with a narrow slit opening.

Authentication for this date is recommended because a number of 1892 Philadelphia coins have been altered by adding an O mintmark. (All USRCI coins are authenticated by one of the major grading services.)
