1907 $20 Saint Gaudens (1907 Saint Gaudens),  PCGS MS64. Ample amounts of bright mint luster are found on and within the devices of this near gem 1907 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle. Wispy marks on both sides keep this coin from achieving a gem grade. The strike shows some weakness on the upper obverse especially on Libertys face and hand as well as the suns rays on the reverse. Engraver Charles Barber redesigned the double eagle with lower relief and the Arabic Numerals date. It was his modifications that made the coins capable of being produced by a single blow from a standard coining press. However, Barbers changes have been the subject of many negative opinions penned over decades of numismatic writing. Whether the opinions regarding Barbers work are justified will undoubtedly continue to be the subject of debate. Some would express the opinion that he was far more concerned with function rather than form and his change in the date showed the shift from classical to commercial.

All of the 1907 double eagles, the ultrahigh relief, the high relief, and the Barber modified low relief have the basic design in common. They also have in common the omission of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Roosevelt wanted this left off because he considered it blasphemous to write the name of God on money, since it could be spent for immoral purposes. However, Congress took a dim view of the missing motto and passed legislation in 1908 mandating its restoration.
