The sketch of the $100 Union was discovered by Jeff Garrett who was conducting research in 2005 for his book on gold coinage. The obverse of George T. Morgans design shows a seated Liberty facing right. The reverse shows an eagle motif taken from Morgans sketchbook but not necessarily intended for use with the Union obverse. The coin weighs 1.5 ounces and is made of .999 fine silver.

Following Garretts discovery, the New York Mint obtained a license to produce the coin with a portion of the profit going to the Smithsonian, where Garrett was doing his research.
