J-1283 1873 T$1 (J-1283, low R-7) NGC PF-66RB Cameo This is a very interesting coin for a number of reasons. First of all, it is very rare with less than 10 pieces still known to exist in all grades. Of that very limited number, this is no doubt the finest known survivor. It very possibly is the only known example with a considerable amount of Cameo surfaces, making it very attractive as such.

Other than that, it is also a very historical and interesting coin. 6 coin sets of Trade dollar patterns were sold to collectors in 1873, when it was unsure what denomination would be used for the new denomination. These had considerable mintages, and are more or less available. Besides the 6 piece sets, there were also a very limited number of other patterns produced. One of these is offered here.

The obverse was designed by J.A. Bailly, who worked occasionally as assistant to Chief Engraver William Barber. None of the circulating coinage ever carried his designs, so this is a rare opportunity for people collecting different pieces of art created by several Mint engravers. The so-called Bailly head is very distinctive, although it does appear to be based on work of Barber. 13 stars are surrounding the head, and the date is below, giving the obverse a simple but stylistic appearance.

The reverse was designed by Barber himself, displaying a Standing eagle holding a shield, with E PLURIBUS UNUM in the field above the eagle. The denomination, spelled as T RADE DOLLAR is below the eagle, with the weight and composition between the 2 design elements. The present coin is struck in copper with a reeded edge.

Wonderful mirrored fields, with frosty devices make the coin a pleasure to hold in hand. A few minor hairlines account for the limited grade, although these are barely visible even under magnification. Medium orange-brown color is seen on both sides, adding to the total effect of the coin. A great coin and a rare opportunity for the specialist.
