J-1601 1879 50C (J-1601, high R-7) PCGS PR-66 CAC. This is a wonderful and rare pattern, with the same obverse as the popular Morgan dollar, but with a different reverse and struck as a half dollar. Struck in silver with a reeded edge (a regular half dollar planchet of the period). Approximately 15 pieces are known to exist in all grades, but scarcely this fine and mostly impounded in specialized collections. As such, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a popular pattern.

In recent times, collectors of the popular Morgan silver dollars have expanded their views and collections to include patterns as well, such as the present piece. A large number of varieties were created, both by Morgan and Barber who competed with each other during the late 1870s and 1880s. Such a collection, with the majority dated 1877, 1878 or 1879 makes for a wonderful display, although completion is extremely hard because of the number of varieties. Examples were made of various denominations, ranging from small dimes to massive $10 gold pieces.

The reverse of this particular pattern was designed by George T. Morgan as well, although it does not bare much resemblance with the reverse used on the Morgan dollar. The eagles wings are much larger, with a different, more stylistic appearance. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is open in the field, covering left, bottom and right of the eagle.

This particular pattern comes up for auction approximately every two years or so, making opportunities very scarce with the increasing demand for patterns. Most of the pieces are in higher grade, as is this piece, but the majority is weakly struck in the centers as noted by the Judd book. The present piece is especially fine on that part, making it among the finest looking pieces regardless of grade. Halogen black and white luster, with various colors showing when tilted, including green, rose and orange. Wonderful eye-appeal makes this smaller version of the Morgan Liberty head very good looking and a great addition to any collection. Stickered by CAC for exceptional quality.
