J-1747 1885 Silver Dollar Pattern - J1747 1885 Proof Pattern Silver Dollar, PCGS PR62, R6. This 1885 Silver Dollar Pattern is toned with shades of tan, brown, and gray. Dark tan is stippled around the stars, most of the dentils and the area above LIBERTY. Libertys face is gray and tan especially across her nose, mouth, cheek, and chin. Gray is also present throughout her hair, on some of the stars, and the date. The reverse is more evenly toned with shades of light and dark tan. Muted mint luster is present within the devices on both sides. The surfaces are original and clean with no hairlines visible even with magnification.

The 1885 pattern silver dollar was also struck in copper and aluminum. The coin was struck from regular dies, but a lettered edge was added. The edge is raised and has the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. It is not known why this pattern was made since the motto was already present on the obverse of the coin. The piece was distributed privately instead of being made available openly to collectors.

George T. Morgan designed the Morgan silver dollar, which was issued every year from 1878 to 1904 and then again in 1921. Hundreds of millions of Morgan silver dollars were saved in bags of 1,000 each in bank vaults because the federal government created artificial demand for them to satisfy the Western silver interests. Some were melted in the 1918, but large quantities remained in bank vaults and were later bought by investors and collectors. Because many millions of Morgan silver dollars exist today in the hands of the public, the Morgan silver dollar has become the most widely collected coin of its era.

The design for the dollar shows a close head of Liberty in profile facing left. She wears a headband inscribed LIBERTY. In her hair are cotton, corn, wheat, and tobacco. She wears a modified Phrygian cap and is surrounded with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, thirteen stars (seven left and six right), and the date. The reverse shows an eagle with wings raised looking left. In its talons are arrows and olive branch, symbols of preparedness and peace. A wreath is below and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is above. Except for the eagles wing tips, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR circumscribe the design.

The low R6 rarity rating means that 21 to 30 pieces are known to exist. In its population report, PCGS shows 5 1885 J-1747 pattern silver dollars in PR62 condition with 5 better.
