1855 Gold Dollar

1855 Gold Dollar - The 1855 gold dollar has a slightly smaller mintage than the 1854 Type 2 Gold Dollar, and it is slightly rarer. Values are essentially the same for both dates and are based on demand as a type coin. They are frequently poorly struck with soft centers and are often from clashed dies.

In 1855 both Michigan and Pennsylvania State Universities were founded. In April riots broke out in Cincinnati between nativists and German-American immigrants. Mount Sinai Hospital was dedicated in New York City. In Louisville, Kentucky a Protestant mob attacked Irish Catholics on an election day. Twenty-two were killed.
