Seven debates took place between Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas in 1858. At that time United States senators were elected by their state legislatures.

Both Lincoln for the Republicans and Douglas for the Democrats were trying toget their parties to win control of the Illinois state legislature. These debates previewed issues that would be raised in the 1860 presidential election, the principal issue of which was slavery.
