APRIL 22nd, 2026 - GOLD PROOF SETS AND GEM INDIAN GOLD

Hello All,

I hope all is well. The beat goes on as the song goes and this week, chicken in the car, the car can't go, that's the way we spell Chicago where my partners will be scouring the countryside for deals and famous Chicago kielbasa sandwiches. I am unable to go this year but will be there for the next one. The collectors and investors end of the market has been interesting and quite business. Not to sound like a broken record but it appears that a lot more people have thought through where they want to go with numismatics and this has helped create one of the best markets in my lifetime and since I've been in the coin arena ...whew am I getting old, since the late 70's, I've seen the ups and downs, and changes in this business/ I am happy to report to you that this is one of the best if not the best most consistent market I've seen in that span of time. For more details and thoughts on the subject please send me an email or give a call.

This weeks hand picked offerings begin with an early quarter eagle from New Orleans of 1842-O which is quite scarce, to a lovely choice uncirculated 1861 quarter eagle followed by a pair of proof gold rarities the first being an 1889 Proof 63 Cameo quarter eagle, mintage of only 48 this year followed by a near match in an 1880 $5 half eagle in Proof 62 Cameo with a total "mintage" of only 36 proof gold half eagles struck that year, and just a thought please, one of the most fun and solid assets in numismatics that you can own is a gold proof set. This has been a specialty of mine going back decades and at this moment I may be able to assemble most of the other proofs to match these 2, or at least get close enough where we won't have to wait long before the gold proof set would be complete. Just a thought to investors, those of us who don't have floor to ceiling safes and who want to own something substantive that when offered in the future will always hear the response, "wow neat". Next on the list is a very scarce 1899-S half eagle in MS-65 that is just a breath away from 66 and has the eye appeal of a 66+. Next is that always desirable 1909-O Indian gold in uncirculated condition followed by another outstanding rarity in the Indian gold series, 1911-D $5 in MS-63 and the pièce de résistance, an outstanding 1915 $10 Indian Eagle in PCGS MS-66!

1842-O $2.50 NGC AU58

Among the scarcest New Orleans-minted Quarter Eagle issues. Well struck and so close to uncirculated.

$5,325

1861 $2.50 T1 PCGS MS62

Shots fired at Fort Sumpter and the Civil War begins when this coin was struck for circulation. The present specimen is uncirculated and choice. Only 14 graded as such by PCGS.

$5,710

1889 $2.50 PCGS PF63 CAM

Very pretty Cameo contrast on this rare proof gold quarter eagle of 1889. Looking thru inventory, I was looking to see if we could assemble a gold proof set and lo and behold I do believe we can get really close in one fell swoop. Only 48 proof gold quarter eagles were minted this year making this a rare date in all of proof gold various series.

$11,200

1880 $5 PCGS PF62 CAM

Even rarer than the mintage of 36 suggests, Total pops both services as follows 1/3, 0/7. I have a proof gold dollar, a lower grade ( prf 60 ) eagle and a proof double eagle so yes Matilda, we can assemble a gold proof set in inventory. This 1880 $5 and the previously mentioned 1889 2.5 would also be a good starting point as both of them have really low mintages and a survival rate that's even lower.

$23,550

1899-S $5 NGC MS65

Absolute Godzilla Half eagle in MS-65 and PQ. Scarcely offered. Less than a dozer graded finer

$6,450

1909-O $5 NGC MS60

Crusty & nice. The sole New Orleans-minted Indian Head half eagle. NGC shows $26,000., PCGS shows $32,500.00. Our price, your cost only

$19,150

1911-D $5 PCGS MS63

Crisp, lustrous, choice collector quality on this rare date Indian half eagle gold. PCGS shows $31,500

$26,900

1915 $10 PCGS MS66

Superior gem quality PCGS MS-66 1915 Indian Gold. Lovely gem, w creamy luster. PCGS shows $35,000 and a population of only 19 with a mere 2 coins graded higher at PCGS.

$19,175
