June 11th, 2025 - Tougher Dates Within Each Series
Hi All,
I hope all is well. Temps here near the Gulf of America are heating up with the 90's being the norm these days along with torrential rains at times. The coin business has been equally hot with both collectors and investors taking positions or expanding their current positions. We saw a slight slowing when the stock market appeared to melt down but now it seems to have bounced back and many people are thinking that maybe it's a good time to do a bit more diversifying. Looks like it's going to be a good year after all!
For over 35 years yours truly has focused on the better dates within each series of rare coins. Not the key dates which at times seem very over sold but the better dates that nobody is looking at when they are being offered and clamoring to find them when they are not. Strive to buy better coins in whatever series you are focusing on. Don't gt hung up on "it's gotta be ms-65" way of thinking. In some series the finest known of a rare variety could be only Fine 15. Would you not buy the finest known specimen of a 1796 $2 1/2 because it's in a lower grade? But it's the best variety there is in searching auction records and lists going back over a hundred years. This is the best there is. If you are instead thinking that you would indeed recognize that opportunity and try to buy it you are entering a phase of numismatics that will help you make better decisions on what to buy, what not to buy, what to sell, etc. You will be rewarded like this over the long run. I promise you. Buy the rarest and best you can afford. Develop a plan. Learn to spot deals not because of price alone but because of availability and quality. You'll be glad you did.
Here's some of this weeks special picks starting with an early 1837 Feuchtwanger 1c on to a beautiful early heraldic eagle silver dollar from 1802/1, to a pair of Classic gold quarter eagles 1838 and 1839, then a gem 1886-S half eagle to a final half eagle from the Carson City mint, wonderful heraldic eagle 1799 silver dollar in choice about uncirculated and displaying large stars, 1895-S Liberty Gold Double eagle that's just hot, to an incredibly rare and neat $5 Stella Pattern $5. gold struck in aluminum which at that time was more valuable than gold.
