1857-O $20 AU55 NGC. The 1857-O double
eagle has long been in the shadows of the three O-mint
issues that preceded it, most notably the 1854-O and
1856-O rarities. Of the 30,000 double eagles coined
at the New Orleans facility in 1857, only a small percentage
survives. Indeed, it is doubtful that more than 150
examples are currently known, just half of one percent
of the original mintage. Uncirculated coins are essentially
non-existent, so any example that approaches Mint State
status takes on even greater importance. This specimen
is in very choice about uncirculated condition and shows
lovely wholesome surfaces, a nice even strike, overall
a very pleasing New Orleans Gold rarity which will please
the fussiest of collectors of Type I Double Eagles.
$19,950.00 Coin Values shows $20,000.00, 5/2008.
