1875-CC Double Eagle, NGC MS62. A
full Mint State survivor of this popular Carson City
double eagle. While somewhat common in circulated grade,
most of the mintage of 111,151 coins entered circulation,
and Mint State examples are scarce. Most of these are
in lower Mint State grades, with examples higher than
62, such as this piece, seldom encountered.
Most of the Carson City Mint gold coins show heavy
bagmarks on the yellow surfaces. The most likely reason
for this, besides that gold is always a soft metal,
is that these gold coins were transported out of Carson
City by horse and wagon. Most went to San Francisco
and surrounding area’s, and many were shipped
overseas. During all these transportation over rural
roads and over the Sierra Nevada, the coins were in
loose Mint bags. The result can be seen on most Mint
State examples from these issues.
This is a wonderful, high quality example of this
popular Carson City double eagle. Although certified
by NGC as MS-62, the surfaces are cleaner than is
expected for the grade. Wonderful light yellow surfaces
show, which are fully lustrous. Almost fully struck,
Liberty’s hair shows much detail and this coin
is an exception as such. The present offering represents
a great coin for both the collector and investor seeking
a high quality Carson City double eagle for both their
collection and portfolio.
