1910-S
St. Gaudens Double Eagle, PCGS MS65. With a mintage
of 2,128,250 coins this issue is far from rare in circulated
and lower Mint State grades. Yet, at the gem level,
examples become very elusive as many show heavy bag
marks. As a result, true gems or finer pieces are rare
with less than 100 pieces certified by the major companies.
The coins that have returned from overseas hoards usually
grade lower Mint State, making a sudden rise in gem
population highly unlikely for this issue.
Gem double eagles are always in demand
by investors who seek high quality examples. Most
of the coins that are bought for that purpose are
the common issues that were saved in high quality
and large quantities. This is not such an issue, as
many circulated among banks in bags and acquired a
large number of distracting marks that limit the grade.
As a result, most demand are from true collectors
who recognize the rarity of this issue at the gem
level.
The present coin is one of those elusive
and correctly graded gems. The fields are remarkably
clean, even for this grade and are fully lustrous.
A bold strike is noted on both sides, bringing all
the design elements up to full detail. Wonderful light
green-yellow color, which is totally original makes
for a great example of this early Saint-Gaudens double
eagle.
