1834 Quarter
Eagle NGC AU58. The first collectible gold coins without
the need of breaking the bank were struck in 1834. This
is a nice example of the first classic head quarter eagle
struck in that year to the extent of 112,234 pieces made
for circulation.
Designed by William Kneass, the classic head gold coins
were minted for a short period in the 1830’s.
These were the first gold coins which were not widely
melted and exported, as had been the case with the gold
coins struck after 1795. As a result, many were saved
and finding nice examples of this series is not too
difficult.
The present piece is a nice, about uncirculated coin,
with only the slightest rub on the high points of the
design. Nice original toning with shades of a darker
golden color, which highlights the strong strike. A
very nice example of this 175 year old gold coin produced
for just six years.
