1907 $2.50 PCGS PR-62CAM. A wonderful
proof example of the last Liberty quarter eagle. A total
of 154 proofs were struck, of which an estimated 100
pieces still remain in all grades. This estimate however
is disputed, and auction appearances seem to indicate
that only 65 pieces are available to modern collectors.
Continuously struck for over six decades,
the Liberty quarter eagles are a major set to complete.
As a result, many collectors choose to add a few examples
to their collections. Much of the collector demand is
from people who wish to own a gold proof coin, an area
of numismatics highly regarded by all knowledgeable
collectors. Investor demand is a different story. It
is the investor who will compare costs to surviving
populations , look closely at how this series compares
with others, investigate price performance over the
years and extrapolate what the future value might be
in order to have an idea of returns on investment.
The present coin has toned to an original
and wonderful orange gold color. For some reason, the
last few years of the liberty head proof gold coinage
tend to tone this way, and collectors have loved this
type of eye appeal for a long time. Some tiny hairlines
are visible in the fields, but most of the sharply struck
devices are free from this. A very likeable proof gold
quarter eagle from a collectors point of view and considering
all the information , the tangible assets investor should
find this coin a solid buy.
