1908 No Motto St. Gaudens Double
Eagle, NGC MS66 Wells Fargo. A wonderful representative
of the no motto 1908 double eagles. Like many high grade
examples, this coin was part of the so-called Wells
Fargo hoard of 1908 no motto double eagles. Dispersed
in the numismatic market during the 1990’s, this
hoard contained 19,900 examples of this issue which
were kept together since the 1960’s, and possibly
earlier.
This issue is usually the representative of the so-called
type 5 double eagle, the no-motto St. Gaudens type.
This is one of the double eagles that is needed in
a type set of American (gold) coinage, and is always
in demand in high grades as such. The present coin
is a wonderful, high grade survivor with virtually
mark-free surfaces. Fully lustrous, with darker toned
surfaces, this is a boldly struck example. A wonderful
coin for the grade and a perfect coin for the type
set collector.
