1861-O $20 XF45-CAC PCGS. With links to the Southern
Confederacy, the 1861-O is an immensely popular Liberty
Double Eagle. The original mintage for this date is
17,741 pieces, a total that can be subdivided as follows:
5,000 coins delivered by the United States in January
1861; 9,750 pieces delivered by the state of Louisiana
from late January through May 1861; and 2,991 coins
struck under authority of the Confederate States sometime
on or after June 1, 1861. We are pleased to offer
this major rarity in the Civil War Double Eagle series.
The 1861-O double eagle was struck under three different
governing authorities: the United States, the State
of Louisiana, and the Confederacy. It is impossible
to state with certainty who struck which coins. It
is estimated that fewer than 200 coins are known in
all grades, most of which are Very Fine, Extremely
Fine, or low-end About Uncirculated.
