1863 Double Eagle NGC AU53 CAC. This coin screams originality. Struck in the middle of the civil war, when gold and silver coins were hoarded and mintages were smaller than before. A total of 142,970 double eagles were struck in Philadelphia, making it a scarce coin in all grades, and rare in About Uncirculated or finer.

After the civil war, gold coin started to circulate again, and that is probably the period when the present coin acquired some wear. Yet, this does not distract at all from the original surfaces from this coin. Darker yellow-orange and rust red colors show on both sides, with no distracting marks. All stars are fully struck, with only the slightest weakness in the centers, which still show lots of detail despite the grade.

With the 150 year commemoration of the civil war just a few years ahead of us, this is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a coin that is destined to rise in value. Especially when in such original condition as the present piece, which is also confirmed by the sticker CAC awarded to it. Also a low mintage issue, with just the 1862 having lower mintage of the coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Both collectors and investors will appreciate the present offering.
