The problem of finding a CSA in such high condition is one that is most easily explained by the method of manufacture. To make an authentic-looking memento, Scott planed off the reverse of 500 1861-O halves. A steel collar was affixed to the coin (now a planchet), and when the piece was struck it was inevitable that the obverse details would be flattened somewhat.

This piece derives much of its grade and desirability to two factors: the exceptionally clean surfaces, and the rich, original surfaces. There are no obvious or mentionable abrasions on either side of this lovely piece and the fact there are no other coins graded finer speaks for itself .
