1861 50C CSA Scott Restrike MS65 PCGS. Breen-8002.
Tied for Finest Known at PCGS! The Scott Confederate
States of America Restrikes are generally found in
the lower ranges of Uncirculated and AU. They are
seldom thought of as condition rarities. Collectors
are usually just happy to acquire an example in any
grade, and high grade pieces are not available unless
a major collection is dispersed. Here is a Gem MS-65
specimen which is tied for finest known at PCGS and
factoring in a possible duplication, may be the finest
PCGS graded Scott CSA Restrike!
The problem of finding a CSA in such high condition
is one that is most easily explained by the method
of manufacture. To make an authentic-looking memento,
Scott planed off the reverse of 500 1861-O halves.
A steel collar was affixed to the coin (now a planchet),
and when the piece was struck it was inevitable that
the obverse details would be flattened somewhat.
This piece derives much of its grade and desirability
to two factors: the exceptionally clean surfaces,
and the rich, original surfaces. There are no obvious
or mentionable abrasions on either side of this lovely
piece and the fact there are no other coins graded
finer speaks for itself . PCGS has possibly only certified
1 other MS-65 and none finer (4/08).
