1884-S Half Eagle PCGS MS64. A premium
quality half eagle from the San Francisco Mint. A total
of 177,000 half eagles were struck during the year.
Although the remaining survivors are considered common,
most are in circulated and lower AU grades. Coins as
nice as the present piece are actually quite scarce.
The with motto half eagles are not much collected
by date, due to the extensive size and cost of the
full set. This results in relatively low prices for
the various date/mintmark combinations. At the same
time, an excellent opportunity arises for the collector
who wishes to start a challenge. Especially in the
mint-state grades 64 and higher, these coins tend
to keep their value and thus are a very safe investment.
During many centuries, gold has kept its value, unlike
many other items.
Sharply struck, this coin shows full cartwheel luster
on both sides. A very pleasing orange gold color highlights
the virtually mark free surfaces. A few tiny abrasions,
barely visible to the naked eye are the only factor
that keep this coin out of a higher grade holder.
