Peru: 1965 G50S, KM#242, 50 Soles, .900 Gold, .6772oz,
NGC MS-67. Superb gem uncirculated Peruvian gold coin
struck to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the
Lima Mint. Virtually flawless surfaces and fully struck,
this specimen appears destined for an even higher
grade. Amazing large size gold coin.
One of the finest certified pieces of this historic
issue from Peru, celebrating the 400th anniversary
of the Mint in Lima. Compared to United States gold
coinage, this piece has an intermediate size between
an eagle and double eagle, and contains 0.6772 Oz
of pure gold. Its design has been popular with collectors
all over the world, thanks to the relation with coins
(as can be expected for a coin celebrating a Mint
anniversary). The obverse features a so-called “coin
on coin” topic, with the design of a 16th century
doubloon, and the date 1565-1965. Part of an interesting
set of gold coins minted in the 1960s, which have
become increasingly hard to find individually. This
is a high grade example of the 50 Soles denomination,
virtually flawless and well struck. No blemishes are
noted on the obverse, and a few minor flecks on the
reverse keep it out of an even higher grade holder.
