In 1860 South Carolina seceded from the Union when it became clear that Lincoln would win the presidency. It was the first state to secede. Within six weeks six other states followed South Carolina out of the Union. Lincoln had considered the talk of secession to be a bluff. He incorrectly believed that the Southerners felt a greater attachment to the United States that would not allow them to leave the Union.
