Gold Dollar - The 1860-S Gold Dollar is generally
well struck and sometimes has prooflike surfaces. It is
rare in grades above MS62 with 19 certified in MS63 and
higher with the best being a single MS65 example. One variety
has the S mintmark struck over an inverted S mintmark.
In 1860 South Carolina seceded from the
Union when it became clear that Lincoln would win the presidency.
It was the first state to secede. Within six weeks six other
states followed South Carolina out of the Union. Lincoln
had considered the talk of secession to be a bluff. He incorrectly
believed that the Southerners felt a greater attachment
to the United States that would not allow them to leave
