1861 Gold Dollar - The 1861 Gold Dollar is one of the common dates of the series; however, they are still very desirable as genuine Civil War era artifacts. Most are well struck and are often found with clashed dies. Sometimes the word LIBERTY can be read on the reverse. Nineteen examples have been certified above MS65. The highest are two examples certified in MS67.

In 1861 the Confederate States of America was established. Eleven Southern slave states created the government that existed from 1861 to 1865. The establishment of the CSA led to the Civil War because the federal government refused the recognize the right of the states to secede.
