1862 Gold Dollar - The 1862 Gold Dollar had a mintage of over one million coins. It is a common date in the series and is popular as a type coin because it is a genuine Civil War era artifact. Varieties include a doubled obverse die and a doubled date. The coin is rare only above MS66 with 13 examples certified, the highest of which is a single MS68.

In 1862 the battle of Hampton Roads between the Merrimack and the Monitor took place. Robert E. Lee was given command of the Army of Northern Virginia. The Second Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Antietam took place.
The Dakota War, also known as the Sioux uprising, was fought. It ended with the execution of 38 Dakota Indians in Minnesota in retaliation for many settlers who were killed.

The Homestead Act was passed.
