In 1863 the Civil War was at its height.
The Battle of Gettysburg took place. It had the largest
number of casualties in the Civil War and is considered
the turning point.
Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation,
which freed the slaves in the Confederacy. The Siege of
Vicksburg took place as well as the New York Draft Riots.
West Virginia became the 35th state as pro-Union counties
seceded from Virginia.
