In 1864 General Ulysses S. Grant became commander of all Union forces. Lincoln was reelected president over Democrat George McClellan, his former general. Only votes were cast in states that had not attempted to secede from the Union. Lincoln carried Louisiana and Tennessee, both of which were by then Union occupied. General Sherman’s March to the Sea is the name given to the Savannah Campaign in which Sherman captured Atlanta and Savannah. Sherman operated without supply lines or communication within enemy territory.
