Gold Dollar - The 1865 Gold Dollar had a very small
mintage of 3,725, one of the lowest of the type. It is rare
in all grades, but a few superb examples were saved, the
finest of which is an MS68. Most pieces are well struck
and frosty. Some have clash marks with Liberty’s head
ghosting on the reverse.
In 1865 Robert E. Lee was made commander-in-chief
of all CSA forces. The capital of the Confederacy, Richmond,
Virginia was captured by a corps of black Union troops.
Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox, and Lincoln was
assassinated. Andrew Johnson became President. The Civil
War ended with the surrender of the rest of the CSA. The
13th Amendment to the Constitution was passed permanently
outlawing slavery in the United States.
