Gold Dollar - The 1868 Gold Dollar is scarce. Most graded
coins are in the mid-Uncirculated grades with 3 MS68s being
the finest. Many examples have deeply mirrored surfaces
and are easily confused with proof; however, all true proofs
have 180 degree rotation giving them a medal instead of
a coin turn.
In 1868 President Andrew Johnson was impeached.
The impeachment ended with his acquittal by the Senate.
The 14th Amendment to the Constitution was passed. It overturned
the Dred Scott ruling by the Supreme Court which said that
blacks could not be citizens of the United States. Also
in this amendment, local governments required states to
provide equal protection to all citizens under the law.
