1872 GOLD DOLLAR - TYPE 3 GOLD DOLLAR

1872 Gold Dollar - The 1872 Gold Dollar had a small mintage of 3,500. It is a very scarce coin, but a few excellent examples are known. There are 9 certified MS67, 1 certified MS68, and 1 MS69. Most are semi-prooflike and can be confused with proofs.

Weight: 1.672 grams (25.8 grains) (.0538 troy ounces)
Diameter: 15 millimeters
Composition: 90% gold; 10% copper
Gold Content: 1.505 grams (23.22 grains) (.0484 troy ounces)

In 1872 Yellowstone National Park was created.

The Amnesty Act was passed. It gave secessionists the right to vote and hold office except for about 500 leaders of the CSA. The Alabama Claims settlement led to friendly relations between the U.S. and Great Britain. Great Britain gave the U.S. $15.5 million for damages done by warships built in Britain and sold to the CSA. In the presidential election of 1872, Ulysses S. Grant, a Republican defeated Horace Greeley, a Liberal Republican from New York.
