Gold Dollar - The 1874 Gold Dollar had a large mintage
of 198,000, making it one of the common dates in the series.
Many examples have die deterioration and have the word LIBERTY
partially or completely missing. The coin is only rare in
MS68 which shows 9 coins certified.
In 1874 the Red River Indian War took place.
It was a military campaign to remove the Comanche and other
tribes from the Southern Plains. The war resulted in the
extermination of the buffalo. It left the Texas Panhandle
permanently open to settlement by ranchers and farmers.
