1876 GOLD DOLLAR - TYPE 3 GOLD DOLLAR

1878 Gold Dollar - The 1876 Gold Dollar had a small mintage of 3,200 and is rare in all grades. They are usually fully mirrored and are easily confused with proofs. Many are poorly struck on both sides. There are 22 graded MS65 and above by both services combined with the highest being a single MS67 example.

Diameter: 15 millimeters
Composition: 90% gold; 10% copper
Gold Content: 1.505 grams (23.22 grains) (.0484 troy ounces)

The 1876 Centennial Exposition was held in Philadelphia. In Munn v. Illinois the Supreme Court ruled that utilities could be regulated by the government. Colorado became the 38th state. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. In the U.S. presidential election, Rutherford B. Hayes, a Republican from Ohio defeated Samuel J. Tilden, a Democrat from New York.
