1879 GOLD DOLLAR - TYPE 3 GOLD DOLLAR

1879 Gold Dollar - The 1879 Gold Dollar had a very small mintage of 3,000. Many were saved in quantity. Most are in Mint State, but not many are gems. The word LIBERTY is often weak or missing. Surfaces are often prooflike.

Diameter: 15 millimeters
Composition: 90% gold; 10% copper
Gold Content: 1.505 grams (23.22 grains) (.0484 troy ounces)

In 1879 Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. Edison developed many devices that influenced life including the phonograph and the motion picture camera. He applied the principles of mass production to the process of invention and is credited with the creation of the first research laboratory.

The incandescent light bulb produces light by heating a filament to a high temperature until it glows. It is supplied with electrical current by wires embedded in the glass. Most are used in a socket, which gives mechanical support and electrical connections.
