Gold Dollar - The 1880 Gold Dollar had a tiny mintage
of 1,600. Most survivors are in Mint State with many of
them being gem and better. Only 19 have been certified in
all circulated grades. The finest known are 2 MS69 examples.
Over 160 have been certified MS67.
In 1880 the Panama Canal construction began
under French supervision. Although it was eventually a failure,
the French equipment was bought out by the United States
under President Theodore Roosevelt.
In the presidential election of 1880, James
A. Garfield, a Republican defeated Winfield S. Hancock,
a Democrat. Garfield received a majority of Electoral College
votes but won the popular vote by only 7,023 votes.
