1881 Gold Dollar - The 1881 Gold Dollar had a small mintage of 7,620. It is known for the high quality of existing pieces with 120 certified in MS66, 153 in MS67, and 73 in MS68 from both grading services. Many are found with prooflike surfaces. They were saved in quantity at the time of issue.

Composition: 90% gold; 10% copper
Gold Content: 1.505 grams (23.22 grains) (.0484 troy ounces)

In 1881 James Garfield was inaugurated President. He advocated a bi-metal monetary system, increased agricultural technology, an educated electorate, and civil rights for blacks.

His presidency lasted just 200 days because he was assassinated in March and died in September. He was succeeded by his vice president, Chester A. Arthur.

The Gunfight at the OK Corral took place in Tombstone, Arizona Territory.
