Gold Dollar - The 1883 Gold Dollar had an increased
mintage to 10,800. Fewer superb gems are found for this
date. Only 16 have been certified in MS68 and 1 has been
given a grade of MS69. Most have prooflike surfaces, and
many have large copper spots or copper stains. Some have
rich, coppery toning.
In 1883 the Brooklyn Bridge opened. It is
still in use and connects the borough of Brooklyn to Manhattan.
The Supreme Court held that in a group of
five civil rights cases, Congress lacked the constitutional
authority to enforce the provisions of the 14th Amendment
to outlaw racial discrimination by private individuals and
organizations. It legalized the doctrine of racial segregation.
