1886 Gold Dollar

1886 Gold Dollar - The 1886 Gold Dollar had a small mintage of 5,000. More lower Mint State examples survive than previous dates of the 1880s. In MS67 there are 18 certified, and in MS68 there are none. Most business strikes are prooflike and very reflective. They are easily confused with proofs.

Weight: 1.672 grams (25.8 grains) (.0538 troy ounces)
Diameter: 15 millimeters
Composition: 90% gold; 10% copper
Gold Content: 1.505 grams (23.22 grains) (.0484 troy ounces)

In 1886 the Haymarket Riot took place. A bombing took place at a peaceful rally in support of striking workers. They were asking for an eight hour work day. The blast killed seven police and four civilians. Many more were wounded.

It is significant as the origin of May Day, an observance for workers. In December the American Federation of Labor was founded in Columbus, Ohio by Samuel Gompers. It was the largest labor union in the United States in the first half of the 20th century.
