1786 New Jersey Copper PCGS F15 CAC (Narrow Shield, Straight Plow Beam). This post-colonial 1786 New Jersey copper coin has deep chocolate brown fields and somewhat lighter devices. The coin shows slightly porous surfaces with some wear, in keeping with the grade, which is confirmed by CAC. Half of the details of the stripes and mane are visible. The strike shows some central weakness on the obverse and more on the reverse.

The obverse shows a horse’s head facing right over a plow with the legend NOVA CAESAREA “New Jersey” above and the date below. The reverse shows a United States shield with the legend E PLURIBUS UNUM separated by six-pointed stars.

In 1786, the New Jersey colonial legislature gave three men, Thomas Goadsby, Albion Cox, and Walter Mould, license to make three million copper coins. One tenth had to be delivered to the Treasurer of New Jersey. These new coppers were valued at fifteen to a shilling.
