1793 G. BRIT D&H-238 1/2P Warwickshire Conventry E: Payable at Birmingham Token NGC XF45 BN. 1793 GB Lady Godiva Conder Token D&H-238 Halfpenny. This Warwickshire-Coventry token shows steel-grey with blue and brown highlights on the obverse and steel-grey on the reverse. Some mint luster shows on the devices of the obverse with traces on the reverse. The surfaces are clean and light wear is seen on the high points of both sides in keeping with the grade. There is slight striking weakness on the obverse left edge and the front of the horse. The token depicts Lady Godiva riding naked through the streets of Coventry to get her husband to lower the taxes he had imposed. The reverse shows the elephant and castle, which is the coat of arm of the city. The edge of the token says PAYABLE AT BIRMINGHAM. The token was designed by William Mainwaring and manufactured by William Lutwyche.

Conder tokens were used to meet a need for low denomination coinage not provided by the government. They were used to pay workers and make change at a time when the King and Queen were reluctant to make any coin of base metal.

Happy Collecting,
