1843-C Quarter Eagle (1843-C $2.50) Large Date, PCGS AU55. This creamy 1843-C Quarter Eagle has bright mint luster within its devices. There are a minimum of surface abrasions and light wear on the high points, consistent with the grade. The obverse center is weakly struck and so are the lower feathers on the reverse. The Large Date is the second of two varieties for this date. It also has a plain 4 in the date and a large C mintmark.
The first two quarter eagle minted at the Charlotte Mint in 1838 and 1839 had their mintmarks on the obverse between the truncation and the date. Beginning with 1840, the mintmark was placed on the reverse above the fraction in the denomination.
All Charlotte gold is highly sought after by collectors and investors as well as those interested in collections with a Civil War connection. In its population report PCGS shows 6 in AU55 with 11 better. |
