1843-O Quarter Eagle (1843-C $2.50), Large Date NGC AU55. Mint luster peeks out from within the devices of this branch mint gold 1843-O Quarter Eagle. The coin shows slight wear on its high points and surface abrasions that are consistent with the grade.

There is also a small scrape across the top portion of the shield. The strike is average on the obverse and better on the reverse. All of the lines in the shield and feathers are clear and sharp. The Large Date is the second of two varieties for this date. It also has a plain 4 in the date. The small date variety has a crosslet 4, which is much more elaborate.

The original mintage of this coin is 76,000. In its population report NGC shows a total population of 112 in all grades, which attests to the rarity of this coin despite its rather large mintage.
