1863 Indian Cent (1863 Indian 1C) PCGS MS63 CAC. This satiny, highly lustrous 1863 1 C copper-nickel cent has superior eye appeal and a bold strike. The date is sharp and clear as are the feathers, diamonds, and wreath on the reverse. The surfaces are mark free, and while CAC confirms the MS 63 grade, it certainly could have been a point or two higher.

James Longacre designed the Indian Head cents, which were first issued in 1859. The new design of 1860-1909 replaced the laurel wreath reverse with an oak wreath and shield. Copper-nickel was used from 1859 to 1864. Prior to 1866, because of their metallic composition, these cents were called “nickels” or “nicks.” After the issuance of the five-cent shield nickel, they were called “white cents.”

Happy Collecting,
Thomas M. Pilitowski
