1863-S Double Eagle (1863-S $20) NGC AU58. Liberty Type 1 Double Eagle. 1863-S $20 Liberty Head, No Motto on Reverse. At the time this double eagle was minted, the outcome of the Civil War was still very much in doubt as the conflict between the states had entered its third bloody year. Civil War coinage, particularly gold coinage, is always popular and this rare and desirable issue is certainly no exception.
Several hundred examples were brought to market following the recovery of the shipwrecks SS Republic and SS Brother Jonathon and were quickly absorbed by an aggressive collector base in the 1990’s illustrating the strong demand for the date that exists amongst collectors/investors.
This frosty example exhibits lovely original color and is ever so close to being worthy of a considerably higher grade. Encapsulated in an older “Fat” NGC holder it is a desirable and historic Civil War double eagle certain to provide both aesthetic and financial rewards to its next owner. |
